The "ballers" of the basketball community often use the word better or good when relating or referring to their skills. I ask the question what does it mean to be better than someone else or good in the sport basketball. There is most likely a complex algorithm to figure this quandary out but I am not going to bore you with math.
For starters let me tell you the definition of good "having the qualities required for a particular role." Essentially what is a role for a player in basketball? To play offence (scoring) and play defense (to stop opposing team from scoring). A good player needs to be able to score at an efficient rate, meaning higher field goal percentage. The way he scores does not matter, If its attempting 20 free throws a game or 10 two pointers. A defensive player wants to do the opposite of what an offensive player needs like lower field goal and low amount of points. This just the foundation of basketball because there is a lot more to the game.
The sport of basketball includes rebounding, consistency, passing, hustle, athletic ability, ball control and other attributes. All of that I named convert to defense and offence depending on your skill level. There may be certain things you are better than the other player and there are certain things he may be better than you. It all depends on how much this converts on the court to help your team. This also shows that there are different types of players, the vague offensive player or defensive player. There includes all sorts of certain things a player is good at and may be mediocre at.
A good player is not defined on his skills it is how much he can contribute to his player. It may be his role as a 3 point shooter and if that is the attribute that benefits the team the most than he is good, in theory. Different players have different roles on different teams. A good player on team A may be horrible on team B because he is not needed. In conclusion a good player is someone that plays his role well enough to contribute his team on the offensive end and defensive end.
